THERE IS SO MUCH PAIN IN THE WORLD

There is so much pain in the world;
Some would say it’s God given but
God didn’t make us, we did.
We came out of a swamp and did not return.
We are swamp creatures and the lizard is within.
Whether we like it or not,
We are not children of God
But creatures that God forgot.
Oh yes! I listen to the birds and see
The beauty of the stars that swirl
In multi-coloured nebulae.
But here’s the rub - my eyes can also see
And ears can hear the pain of
Blasted infamy.

When soldiers cradle babies
Thrown by fathers saving them from fate -
The fate their fathers know will come to them -
And mothers wail to lose the life
So wrenched,
The pain is more than my eyes see
But while we sit complacently
We are just as guilty of the sin
As those who praise the name of Him.

I want the raw truth, feel free to knock me on my back
Last few words:
I wrote this poem in reaction to seeing newsreel of the terrible scenes in Afghanistan when the Americans and their allies pulled out recently.

Reminds me of the famous photograph of the soldier from WWII that was in mid air after an artillery round hit near him. The theme of Man’s inhumanity to Man jumps out to me here.
