Time's Memories

Time came to her late one night
wizened and weary, carrying a light
He paced across her kitchen floor
- his agitation impossible to ignore;

Oh me! He exclaimed. Oh me oh my!
the hours are simply flashing by
I cannot remember my memories
and I'm no longer sure of my destiny!

She blinked at him a second or two
then said - surely your destiny is to simply be you?
To fulfil your role as you've always done
perpetually existent as the moon and sun?

Time slowed his pacing, he had worked up a sweat
but what of these memories I feel I forget?
What of this gnawing ache in my heart
that alls been for nought, from the very start?

If it brings any comfort, she offered with a smile
we all forget some memories, after a while
As for feeling like your efforts are for nought
what was the trigger to create such a thought?

People! People! They pay no mind
to the sacred nature of the essence of Time!
So busy busy busy, they rush here and there
... very few pause to give Time due care!

Ah yes, she nodded, well, you see
people can't always choose when to be 'free'
We are tied to society's timetables, it’s not a choice
too many people work to live, not to rejoice
There are bills to pay and children to feed
and government agencies governed by greed.

Time hung his head, he sighed a deep sigh
- so people are trapped and so am I
I must simply stand tall and carry on
doing as I've done all along...

Maybe, she said... but sometimes perhaps
you could take a break... a little lapse
Maybe on Sunday, every third week
you could slow time down just a tweak
- just enough so you have some respite
perhaps gaze at the stars or memories write....?

Time offered a quirky little smile, I like how you think
... perhaps a wee bit of 'tweaking' will stop me taking to drink!
I'm glad I landed here tonight, although it was by chance
I was heading for a winery in the south of France!

Be kind to yourself, Father Time, remember people aren't all bad
everyone's just doing the best they can with the time they have.

hello Image Weaver,

I love that you have given "Time" a personality...you personify him beautifully. you have given him a story and history. the story unfolds with a rhythmic flow and it hooks the reader into wanting more! Well done, poet!

Thank you so much!
I've often thought of Time as an ancient old man... then the other day I was pondering on how "we" grumble about time, and not having enough and yet in many instances don't utilise it wisely... and so a poem began to unfold ...

Peace and Blessings Sharonlee Imageweaver

but, I understand that most people say that their work is when it doesn't have the cadence or sing-song sound. You can develop that beat by taking out words that don't matter and adding some where there is need, or even twisting the sentence for more rhythm. It's up to you to figure it out and your choice as to how much work to put into it. I like your theme, your choice of words and think that it is a great personification. I think that you could tweak it here and there to make it more sing-song, but it's good as it stands. ~ Geez.

I know the poem isn't free verse... I just wasn't sure how else to categorise this... I'm not accustomed to posting where one is required to tick boxes and pigeon-hole one's work.

just letting you know. Yeah, I can see us deleting those [pigeon-holes] in the future. That's ok, I still enjoyed this poem, no matter how it is placed. ~ Geez.
