Freefall

Should you visit the cloud-filled
Grand Canyon, perhaps
one day in late September,
you might have a look
at the threatening sky
that heralds winter.

Now view the billowing
masses that boil upward
overflowing the abyss’ rim;
something about it
makes you think
it is the sky’s
inverted cloud base,
your heaven’s carpet--

Tempted?
Stepping off the ledge
would lead to a perceived
heavenward freefall,
a shortcut to the meeting
with your maker.

I know the mesmerizing Canyon;
therefore, I say: keep those
of weak mind on the leash.

Hi, Jerry
This is how the Grand Canyon felt to me - a tempting lure into Heaven. A very spiritual visit, but one that requires you to keep your head on straight. How fortunate you are to have this beauty in your backyard! "Heaven's carpet..." Wonderful language, and appropriate title!
Thank you!
L

as always, I can count on your correct interpretation of my verses. It's always a pleasure to hear from you, dear lady. If ever you wish to revisit the canyons, let us know and we'll put you up. Lynda and I would accompany you. There are many other wonders to behold in our our state. Just send me a PM whenever you wish. No strings attached. Jerry

that locale is one of those places that makes one feel insignificant. Really like the last stanza!
