Beyond the Shore

In unexpected moments
somewhere between my head and my heart
I see the ones I’ve lost

They visit between worries of the day
or seemingly unconnected thoughts,
and other odd places

They are here with me today
on a cold-cloud morning at the shore
The waves are colored grey
like my thoughts
The tide is relentless
like the way I miss them

I just need a little more time
to smooth the rough edges
of loss and grief and sorrow

No need to dwell here endlessly
peace will eventually come, I know
I’ve been here before

So funny that you used the term "speak to me as a mirror", Teddy. One of my projects this year is learning how to self publish a chapbook I am going to title: In the Mirror!

Thank you so much for the kind words, but I'll have to forego the "legend' title. Kind, but far from it. Now Amanda Gorman is a legend to me - wow! Her performance was amazing yesterday - so inspiring!

I think I'll try out one of your titles to see how I like it - THANK YOU!

Teddy - Especially when you consider that she has speech and auditory impediments she has not allowed to define her. It was an amazing performance, and it's all people have been talking about here in the States. She was the perfect choice for her time - amazing!

Hello, Michael,
I've heard and read that we (humans) are much more emotionally connected with nature and the earth than we realize. I believe it to be true. Looking out over the ocean, there always seems to be a genuine understanding and acceptance of our current feelings. Your poem has affirmed that feeling for me - I especially like the reference to the relentless tide. A very genuine connection.
Thank you,
L

Thanks L! I really resonated with your insights about our connection with nature, and I also believe in our often overlooked connections with it too. Glad you liked this piece.
