"VICTORY"

The death birds float like scattered clouds
so many they are seen for miles
for they have gathered for a feast
prepared by fools.

The battlefield smells of rancid meat
bodies posed in final agonies.
Uniforms though different share a trait:
all splashed with crimson turning brown.

The "victors"stare and shake their head
at the task which faces them.
How can they inter so many dead
killed by their masters' latest whim?

This battle saw survivors on the losing side
who melted into the countryside
mounters and swamps cover them
living to fight another day.

The winners casualties were high
high enough to give them pause
but not enough to halt this war
and send cannon fodder home.

So did either side really win
when the fight goes on?
In this battle there was just one victor.
The death birds which float like scattered clouds.

and free verse it is. Fantastic, very clever and full of imagery. I like your style on this. Your title subtle? lol
You are always great fun.

Thank you...Teddy

I'm never sure if my semi-rare free verse is any good

Hi, this poem is really well written. The imagery is fine but gory. It rather makes me sad all over again because of my two young uncles who died and whose bodies were never found.
Your free verse is excellent, you don't seem lost at all...LOL.
The ending is true, it's a Pyrrhic victory where nobody wins, only those "deathbirds which float like scattered clouds."
Can't say I enjoyed it, but your imagery is great all the same, best wishes, Gracy

I do a free verse every once in a while just so people won't think I'm a rhyme snob. I reckon the gore had to be in there considering the subject. Appreciate your kind words
