Dead Man Walking

The sanctimonious words were spat
Into the air
bless me father for I have sinned
the Padre listened

I've killed someone its true
but remorse is not felt
however I'll say I do
to save this mortal soul
the Padre raised his head

you've taken a life
an inner voice spoke
an innocent victim young and strong
taken was his choice to live on
and the Padre tilted his head

Do not ask that this soul be spared
for wht will be left to a family that cared
but a casket buried six feet below
the son of a family that love him so
and the Padre stared into space

The prisoner was led through the hall of dread
dead man walking echoed through the halls
don't let me die was all he said
and the Padre bowed his head
to pray

Well now. Thank you for your words. This poem is not about anyone . The term Dead Man Walking( I don't know if it is still used) was used when they walked prisoner down to be executed and that is all that is real about this poem

Hi, Chrys,
Very sobering poem. You have shown the many sides to such a situation, all of them equally sad. Your last description of the Padre is vivid and a powerful final thought.
Thank you,
L

Thank you for reading. Yes the last line was meant for impact as I was writing this I could see it all unfold
