TWO OLD SWINGERS

As Robert rode down his birch trees
far in his northern Yankee land
climbing, then bending them with ease
their stance no longer straight and bland

Upon a time and place so far away
I have done so, too, with pine saplings
on a hot and sunny summer day
beneath shade enhanced by sol's dapplings

Sometimes not riding them to ground
just far enough to reach another
thus propelling self all around
from one pine to its nearest brother

Down here the soil? Red not black
as I expect it was for him
I often think of going back
before the path becomes too dim

Might we two old swingers meet some day?
I'd like to think we may, perhaps
in a place I hope to one day stay
and shake hands still sticky from trees' saps

I was not a boy of that age in the country, but spent a lot of time alone or with just one other companion at that age in the fifties, because of Polio and various other [so-called] childhood diseases. Polio was a big fear for the adults back then and we were not encouraged to play with just anyone. You are right, we just found something to do. It wasn't as though we had phones or Wi-fi and electronic games. We had a huge cemetery on the hill behind our house and the woods and area were a big play spot for us youngsters. Sticks and the rare plastic or metal guns were a staple of our cowboy and injun wars and we made do with whatever came to hand. ~ Geezer.

You played with toy guns and didn't become a mad man killer? And you weren't arrested or kicked out of school? Amazing.lol.I recall picking my son up after school with both our rifles and hunting stuff lying in the truck bed. Would get arrested now..........

I guess a part of me did become a mad man Killer! At least, he has remained only a part of my psych. And he does only kill bad people! But, he just uses a knife, I wonder if that is the difference? Nope, was never kicked out of school. Matter of fact they had a hard time getting me to the school, I would much rather have been out in the woods with my rifle or fishing pole.Yeah, I remember seeing a few people around town that drove around with rifles in the back window of their pick-up trucks during hunting season and fishing poles during the summer. Nobody blinked an eye! ~ Gee.
