TWO SUMMERS

This summer is nearing its end
with My summer being far behind.
Winter is now an old friend
yet autumn occupies my mind
as flocks form preparing to fly.

In this time of such discontent
I find my peace in rugged places,
the kind where Cherokee once went,
the remote isolated traces
beneath a chill and cloud chased sky.

Give me birch and tall oak trees
on a hillside right beside a creek
just as puddles start to freeze
and bucks seek does willing and sleek
while coyotes sing their mournful cry.

Such times are still a month away
for now I wipe sweat from my face
swatting mosquitoes buzzing my way
heat causing me to slow my pace
but not the speed of time passing by.

I come upon an ancient cedar tree
and sit beneath its dense cool shade
just gathering serenity
while dry flies sing their serenade
and a woodpecker seeks lunch nearby.

The warmth of the early afternoon sun
causes my eyelids to slowly droop
until dream time has begun
and shoulders and my old head stoop
as sun lowers on this snoring guy.

The evening bane emerge with evening air
causing me to slap myself
which brings me back to self aware
just as the dusk asserts itself.
The sun almost deserts the sky.

I shake my balding self awake,
stretch stiff muscles into shape,
the stretching causes wind to break,
whose cloying cloud I can't escape
so I head back home with a small sigh.

the rhyme here, especially the ending lines of each stanza. It was such a peaceful scene, that I was truly tempted to just chuck everything and go out back to the patio and catch a nap in the shady yard.
Alas, it is not to be, I really need to get some things done. Why is it that I seem to have so much to do today? Oh yeah, that's what I did yesterday! As always, good stuff. ~ Gee.

I loved this poem. It was full of beautiful imagery. It was also peaceful. I loved the rhyme. I didn't catch on to the rhyme after each stanza until Geezer pointed it out. Then I had a kind of wonderful admiration for your poem. Bravo! For an awesome poem.
