SPRING OWLS

Tonight I heard a barred owl call
in the hollow right behind my house
among the oaks ancient and tall,
perhaps it just had caught a mouse.
Two others answered before long.

Then soon it seemed the woods were full
each trying to outdo the other
beneath a moon that tended full.
They flew from one tree to another.
I realized they were voicing their love song.

In bed, darkness, and peace I listened
as they slowly worked their way downstream
through dew laid leaves which dimly glistened.
It seemed, almost, to be a dream
as the symphony became less strong.

At last their courtship came to an end
all while My love lay fast asleep
(or maybe her sleep was pretend).
Bedside clock moved at a creep
while my mind echoed with owls' song.

Then came a stirring next to me
and thoughts of courtship filled my head.
Those owls had set my eros free
So I touched my wife beneath bedspread.
When she asked me what was wrong
in the warm darkness iI just said "HOOT".

Yes, Springtime is the season for the owls and doves and squirrels and and… Maybe Us? Of course wives are not interested in why we are waking them in the early morning hours. They just want know; "Are you alright?" Not having a heart attack?" YES, we are! An attack of wanting to reach their hearts. "Yeah, well if you want to reach my heart, get up or go back to sleep!" Maybe make breakfast and bring me a tray, let me sleep in." Oh well... LoL BTW, I like the pattern and your rhyme is flawless as per usual. ~ Gee.

I notice you do not include Whitman in your favorites. His sensibility and style does depart from the others you mention.

"I just said 'hoot'! I wish I could write like that about my wife and I but we tend to be more like Shakespeare's battling friends who later become couples and continue verbal skirmishes.

My total list of favorites would likely be too long to post but Whitman is among them. There are a lot of couples I've noticed who fight a lot just because making up is so much fun lol. thanks for dropping by
