Do you ever hate being a poet?

Sometimes my poems come fully formed into my mind and I just have to perform the brainless task of typing them out.
They are the second best ones.

The third best ones are where I get an idea and construct a poem around it. They're not always very bad.

The best ones start as something niggling at the back of my head and gestate like that thing from "Alien" and burst out of my head instead of my chest, leaving a unfillable hole of despair and depression. I sometimes fucking hate being a poet but there are few other choices for a lazy bastard like myself.

I remember great poems at first reading, have an almost eidetic memory for great poetry but can never memorise my own. Once they're out they won't go back in. And good riddance. Apart from some in poetry magazines, a few online places and my MA Thesis I refuse to publish.

Let other people deal with that shit, if they're game. I don't self-promote. All advertising is shite, all workers in the advertising industry and marketing are Goldgafrinchams.
'Tell'em fuck'em, nah, fuck'em, tell'em nuthin'.

Comments

have sworn I left a comment here already concerning unfinished poetry....oh well I'll leave it now lol.
Being a builder I have been trained to complete things. I tend to not get paid until a project is done . So that carries over to my scribblings. I suspect there are 150 or so uncompleted poems within the spiral bound notebook which I compose in. They were mostly well begun(in my humble opinion) but then I'd hit the point where I couldn't figure out the end I was seeking. Pisses me off . Sometimes at night I can almost hear these orphans hollering at me to finish them...................

I don't always comment on your revisions but sometimes a simple word or even punctuation change makes a whole difference to a poem.

Many could improve their work as significantly as you have by simply revising and allowing us to see the revisions.

We could run a workshop on Instant poems .. Formed poems .. and just writing.. It would be fun I use to write for people out in the odd Pub and Café but don't go there now so I just write on the web, mostly instant writes. I still have a few copies of my words on Beer mats lol. We can look into a way of making us write. Take care my Bru, Yours Ian ..

Think about it bro. I know you already have heavy responsibilities with the Undiscovered Poems list but do you think you could fit in running a worksshop?

No hurry, Geezer and I are planning a workshop to rewrite the entire history of poetry so that may take a little time [grins]

cheers,
Jess
