A Poem A Day

Everything’s faster these days
Cars and computers
Mandolin players and ocean polluters
Bullet trains
And mass shooters

We’re masters of distillation
Bit and byte cognation
And, of course,
Advert infiltration

It’s never been a more fitting time
To abridge a whole life
Into abbreviated rhyme

But the role of the poet
Has always been to slow it

Down
Consider what makes a king or queen
A worthy courier
Of a crown

Cook a billion or trillion year cake
In order to
Missive make

Fit the growth of a redwood tree
Into the pod
Of a pea

It’s ironic that just
To read
A poem a day

Could help you find yourself
The player in a play

As fiery as the love
Between Romeo and Juliet
As history-changing
As an astronaut or a suffragette
It’s only a few brief moments
And yet

The world at large
Can be found
In a thimble

The mystery of the cosmos
In a five point
Symbol

The slow plod of time
In words so nimble

That you’re not aware
Your life has been changed

With just a bit of the alphabet
Thoughtfully rearranged
