POLITE TRICKS (February Contest)

Polite Tricks,
People 'Demon-Strating'

Why do you offer umbrellas in a thunderbolt?

Democracy is the more crazy.
Advanced Polite Corruption.
When did brooms sweep stones?

Youths priced out of conscience
setting fire to their father's hut.
It is sad that
these ignorant ELECT-trickcians
decide the fate of all
as we push the 'VOLTS-IN' to
ballot boxes
we will be electrocuted
and killed
Against our will.

'S-Election' is here,
The Devil astir
To and Fro, to and fro
Deflecting defections with affection for corruption to bring affliction,
To the masses,
Like an exodus of locusts
Looking for what to devour
They perch on this farm called Nigeria.

So typical of Lucy,
Their obsession for Power,
Emits voltages enough
to wipe this generation
And we let the cycle continue.

The locusts are back to the farms,
After four years of hard labor.
We cultivated in the smoldering sun,
These locust know their time.

Father Ojukwu warned us,
Handed us insecticides,
Incendiary was his evangelism,
Revolutionary his vision,
A necessary evil,
But we betrayed him and aided this fire,
Forgive us father!

You saw behind the shadows.
We only saw half of the yellow sun
in the hills of gold
Peering out of the mountain top
And we thought it was Heaven's gate.

Today that fog has
transformed into
hungry for blood.
All we have left is
pointing fingers;
the remaining four
look back to us.

Still we don't understand
we do not need
a change in government,
But a change of Mind.

What did you think of my title?
How was my language use?
What did you think of the rhythm or pattern or pacing?
How does this theme appeal to you?
How was the beginning/ending of the poem?
Is the internal logic consistent?
Last few words:
With regards to the coming Election in Nigeria, an highlight of the Nigerian political system... 'People DEMON-Strating Persecution'. A personal interpretation for the Party (PDP) The People's Democratic Party whose official logo is an Umbrella bringing about the line 'Why do you offer umbrellas in a thunder bolt?" 'Advanced Polite Corruption' a personal interpretation for the political party APC All Progressive People's Congress. Whose official logo is broom, warranting the line 'When did brooms ssweep stones? Have Nigerian poltics in mind while reading...
Editing stage:

your message is clear. The writing is good. The piece could be performance style. Have you considered it? It is a way to reach a larger audiences. Here in my city a poetry reading at a cafe gets 20-30 people, mostly old. The performance poetry events get 100+, mostly young. A poem like this could go viral in a good video.

Philosophically, many books, poems, songs, writing on the walls, and martyrs, emerge each generation to try and make right the inert corruption of whatever political system rules a country.
The primal forces or fear, tribalism, the the whole concept of "leader of the herd" is always at work, and evil people use that against the people to enforce their will. We have shitty DNA for sociology
"Democracy" in the utopian sense always supersedes all other social structure. The ultra ideal would be communism, but that is reserved for the happy angels in heaven giving what they can and taking what they need. So we'll stick with democracy. Get people aware, keep the conversation going, change the attitudes of your elders...

This has been the goal of poets for ages. As for democracy, well, even in England, Winston Churchill once said "If you need a case why democracy will fail, just talk to the average voter for five minutes."

just sayin. This is a great political poem, Drew. Get it out there.

I'd rather learn from one bird how to sing
than teach ten thousand stars how not to dance

I am really happy you love it... What is simplest for me is writing. It is almost like a flick of a wand. I can write ten poems in an hour. Writing a performing script of this is easy, what is not easy is getting it out there. The finance, video and everything I am just a person from the slums who knows nobody. I have approached many universities theater Arts departments, they keep asking me for qualifications... But all I just wanna do is write. Lock me inside, I will read, write, write, read, write, write, write and write....
