American Version of Renga: Collaborative Poetry Writing

Let’s talk about it

Workshop Title
American Renga or
Eternal Renga or
Round Robin
Etc

Tanka is a Japanese traditional poem consisting of 5 lines with a 3 lines Haiku or Senyru with 2 lines couplet. Renga is a string of Tanka created from Haiku Senyru and Couplet that creates a Renga. Thus a Renga is a Collaborative form of Japanese poetry that’s been around centuries invented by Japanese culture.

Im tho creating American Version of Renga from Free Verse, Modern or Western poetry. Any form of poetry is welcome. Rhyming, Meters etc. But, the rules are simpler and less restrictive.

The structured rules are: No more than 8 or 9 lines per poem submitted; Each poem is to be 2 three-lined stanzas with 1 two-lined couplet or 3 three lined stanzas, no more than 9 lines total. There will be no more than 7 syllables per line each.

This is the idea that’s cycling my thoughts. The theme of this first American Renga is Rain/Raindrops. I’m sharing Eulekia’s rain poem to get the bell rolling, which he can edit accordingly in this blog as I only put breaks to show the desired structured.

I went walking alone
in the dead of the night
The birds had taken flight

Except for the nocturnal owl
flying silently about
Not a soul was in sight

Hear the echoes of my footsteps
as I went walking in the night.

a cleansing agent for the air
so too it is for my soul
when raindrops soak me whole

pitter patter on the roof
sounding like horse's hooves
chases cobwebs from my mind

then I have some coffee sips
raising toast for rainy days

from sky it falls to quench thirst
flora and fauna to gulp
from rivers lakes lagoons

fair to all colors in life
no matter their creed or breed
an elixir for all life

brings home message from Rain Gods
"so much good is in sharing"

clouds give me inspiration
earth sends an invitation
anxiously waiting for me

cool breezes excite my heart
to a thunderous applause
I am off to greet the land

rivers become my runway
and seas my destination

miscible by my nature
i mingle with the masses
in all forms shapes and sizes

I make all pastures as dreams
for livestock to graze and feed
to fill their udders with milk

I dread all folks who in greed
masquerade the humble trees

You’re on a pleasant role

I am all lovers delight
Angel to kids who frolic
a dream girl to the barren

in tears i feel sorrow
fears I show upon hide
I enjoy in snow ball fights

omnipresent in your life
truly like a friend in need
