Why do we write?

Why do we write, why bother going through this torture to which so few of the world have any interest in at all? Eumolpus asked.
We all have different answers, except mine. I do it expecting to become a billionaire.
What are your answers?

I dunno

I've never liked puzzles per se, but a good turn of phrase has always intrigued me.
writing a poem can have this same intrigue;
a quasi-puzzle that has to be worked out, molded, sculpted, fitted and trimmed,
seeking a shape and form, finding the exact word, and a musicality whether mellifluous, or
down home raunchy vernacular

I guess I write because I like the puzzle solving aspect of it all
so now, why do puzzle people like puzzles...that's another question

Al

particularly like puzzling, crafting and raunchy vernacularity (sic?).

Jess

"vernacularity" ...point well taken, keepin' me on my poor achin' toes

Al

I wasn't correcting you. I've never seen the word 'vernacularity' before, as far as I know I coined that usage,

corrected nonetheless...sorry to devalue your coinage, but it is already a very real word,
with a real meaning, and usage, which should have been used in the context of my sentence.

I've never seen the word before either... but there it is!
let's play with the new word in town, it sounds fun!

The first thing that comes to mind is the hope that my children and their children will read some of my stuff after I'm gone in order to catch a hint of who I was other than a father or grandfather.
Then there's sharing things with others. My experiences, hopes and ideas.
And last and least the joy of occasionally finding words which just happen to go together in a manner others find pleasing..........stan

the only time I've ever considered publishing, is for my nieces and nephews and grand n&ns to read.
I'm thinking of leaving everything in my will to whichever of them will take on the task.
Cos I couldn't be bothered.
Poetry was always very private, apart from academic publications, till I found Neopoet.
Since then you guys have been enough.

that, so far, works better than becoming a billionaire.

And to be brutally honest, it's a great excuse not to have real job.

Moment of truth.
I think I write because I have so much to say - about anything and everything. Because I like communicating. Because I have a fascination for words. And let's face it, because my ego drives me to do it. A want/need for recognition. To be good at something and to be seen to be good at it.
There, that's my honest, soul searing answer.

to hear your cheers
and like me get kicks
then as a mad race horse I run
towards hell for fun'
with a hope that you will become a billionaire
when others read your critique
since poetry you rarely compose
and so none to the gardens bins of garbage
any one can dispose
as after picnics all disperse
leaving scope to be herd in verse

as in simple English you know
Lovedly can't discuss
oh to avoid all the fuss
and we must openly confess
ego over rides as we age jess
and cannot ride
much astride

so you must compose as I have done here
can you have your kicks now kick me dear
Jess
and smilingly confess
Lovedlys gems are in a mess
so all poets here press on regardless

that ego doth increase with age
there is no ego and no fear
of being forgotten, nor thought a sage.
(tis only generosity to share
with little known kin, though dear.)

My critique surpasses my poetry, true
and to this day I sorely rue,
the pain it causes, to all and you.

"The Flagellant lashes those submissive loins
Ignorant what that dramatist enjoins,"
(Yeats), and blunders on, kicking groins,
till this day and the next
and next
and next
adieu

I have written several. Here's one:

POETS BLOOD

As swamps and pools decide
They are a river, tunneling
Through forest roots until
The river’s fist knocks to waves,

So a gypsydom rakes my blood
For some insistent dream,
Drums a beat this body discerns
And shouts its cry of presence.

So these words make a poem.
So the waves heave their burden.

Eumolpus
I'd rather learn from one bird how to sing
than teach ten thousand stars how not to dance
ee cummings

"So these words make a poem.
So the waves heave their burden."
Are perfect words.
Thank you.

Some of the above ( not the cracking down on women bit though Lol ) - like the challenge, ego when ( if ) I rise to the challenge + just have the urge - something in the psyche.

you will become a billionaire.
Not even cracking on to a few boy toys like Jane does?
They really fall for that mushy poetry stuff from cougars like youse.

I figured out how to make a small fortune writing poetry. First, start out with a Large fortune lol

or in my case, write it on my body and charge pay per view.
It will save me grief and bother throwing rocks at all the women who come round trying to see, touch and have it, anyway.
