I have seen you on many occasions complain about others who made religious statements. You say that you don't like them pushing their beliefs on you. Is this blog not doing the same thing you claim to deplore?

just click on the link and you will understand exactly why I felt compelled to post this.

I'll do so tomorrow. I'm not so hide bound as to refuse to listen to other opinions.......i hope lol......stan

I have seen Stevens talk a few times, I guess that as the end time comes for us al we will thrash around in many ways just in case we are wrong.
As Steven I think about those things in that way and still wonder what the hell is this all about.
For thousands of years A type of religion has driven men and women to become slaves and to be all the things their rules say should not be done.
Probably just another way of suppressing the millions.
I am so glad to have spoken to the Children as they are more real than reality, I have never heard one of them talk about religion or a God, I suppose as they are one, and part of the whole, then there is no need.
Cant see any reason to have one in their order of things.
You take care young Jess, I bet you get quite a few comments on this topic, would love to know what this does to our ethics can I keep mine,
Yours as always, Ian

Perhaps it's because I didn't want to antagonise a dear and trusted friend.
You refer to two of the most repulsive concepts I know of, end of times and Pascal's Wager.
End of times is not a scientific concept, it is the excuse of all religious fundamentalists for their excesses.

Pascal's Wager is that ultimately wimpy rationalisation that you might as well believe in god, just in case you're wrong.

A sharp slap on the wrist for raising both concepts, albeit obliquely.

Also praise for raising the pertinent points "For thousands of years A type of religion has driven men and women to become slaves and to be all the things their rules say should not be done.
Probably just another way of suppressing the millions."

You know it is only in the last ten years or so (I never claimed to be a quick thinker, just a deep one) that I've realised that the much beloved of hippies and new-agers philosophy/religion, Buddhism, is one of the most nasty and pernicious thought systems around. "Life is illusion so don't organise to improve your lot, just hope for a better incarnation next time".

The end time to me is when our sun becomes a red giant and swallows most of our system before knocking off and becoming a piece of debris.
Mankind will probably not last very long on the scale of things.
Pascal's Wager well you know there are so many that on their death beds, hedge their bets by finding a God.
As I said, being the way I am and my own thoughts on things A deity doesn't come into any of my ways.
Unconditional love, is another thing you question sometimes, it is that I haven't room in my feelings to hold grudges or to be able to judge anyone, I am a strong believer in that you will judge yourself, then and only then will a truth be heard and your station in the run of things be permanently established for ever.
Damn it not even Sunday, smiling into my key board.
Jess we have been here quite a while now and overall I am not sure about you but you have taught me many things, not only poetry (or tried) but thoughts on just being.
You take care young one and be proud that you teach all you meet in many ways, it is called Life.
I have met many people on my journey here and try to learn from them all, not to be swayed by them, just to learn.
Thank you,
Yours, as always, Ian..

Well it appears you and Stevens might be making the same mistake . you both think that any type of deity is a micromanager and thus responsible for every little thing that happens, good or bad. And if you blame God for everything you have left out at least two things to consider : free will, and if there is Good there is also Evil. So why blame God for things which might well be the fault of the Evil?

Yet Fry goes around railing against a being he doesn't even believe in.Then apparently refuses to think anything bad could well be caused by another deity he doesn't believe in. Quite a contradiction isn't it? If one truly doesn't believe in any deity why go around talking about said deity so much? Instead rail against PEOPLE who like to pervert religions into tools to further their own private agendas.
Ask yourself this. which is worse, to be an atheist and upon dying being proven wrong, or being a religious man and upon dying being proven wrong?

Fry speaks freely in metaphor, his failing being the arrogant assumption that lesser intellects will understand his irony and metaphor. Lesser intellects and levels of education being theists, of course, pretty much a statistical fact.

Bottom line, Stan, is us atheists would love to shut up, we will shut up, as soon as religious types stop proselytising through every medium from school through media even unto sit-coms.

I know you are not an evangelist, Stan, so forebear from direct attacks on you (well, recently, anyway) but Christianity is by its very nature evangelical and therefore an abomination that should be hunted down and exterminated.

This is a prime example of how religious beliefs damage thought, knowledge and understanding-
One of the greatest minds ever, Sir Isaac Newton, when calculating the movements of the planets got it nearly spot-on! With only the most rudimentary telescopes and no computers. However his maths did not quite fit the observable facts, retrospectively an elementary error, he had assumed the orbits were circular. If he had taken their elliptical nature into account it would have worked out fine. But what did he do instead? He fell back on caveman superstition- god did it. Yes, he actually argued that god made the necessary corrections to the planets orbits "by hand", so to speak.

This is part of why I abhor religion and all its manifestations..

I stopped wondering, We all will know eventually. Whatever the case may be, it gets harder and harder to believe in anything, But that doesn't work for me, or I would be totally lost. I admire your holding to your ideals, It makes you strong. I just hope you enjoy every minute of every day. You have a tremendous positive impact on all of us . Maybe that is a deity working through you.

Pascal, who was a devout Jansenist, wrote : "Le silence éternel de ces espaces infinies, m"éffraie."

"The eternal silence of these infinite spaces, terrifies me.''

I hear that ''ETERNAL SILENCE''" get louder each passing day.

A one
a two
a one two three four
row row row your boat,
always sharp upstream,
merrily, naughtily, heartfully, lustily
Life's a big extreme wet dream.
