SUNRISE

I didn't know that I missed shadows
throughout these endless winter days
when skies were unrelenting gray
and sunshine was nowhere to be found.

All the world was bleak and stark
lacking detail, even depth
where horizons faded into haze
and days all passed without remark.

Old eyes strained from lack of light
and had no need of a hat's brim.
No stars or moon lit up the night
all dark as inside a black cow.

In forests no canopy of limbs
traced shadows on the ground below
where the duff stayed dull and dim.
Time passed without notice.

No crow or buzzard shadows flowed.
No sun glinted off polished antler.
No joy at sunrise or sunset:
No warm rays fell upon my face....

I didn't know that I missed shadows
until I saw this morning's sun.

Reading your poem I thought ,
sun had by Americans
been caught

a week that i was in Chicago
they all did not know
whether ever again
the sun will glow
or farmers ever again seeds sow

So they said
lets all stay in side and plow
human seeds emplow
perhaps then God will feel
the urge
to USA population curb
and
save trillions needed so much
to polish all world up
as in war
then once again be felt
as special ones
from door to door
So as you say sunrose
today somehow!

I'm just glad I don't live in the far northern states where winter is a 5 month affair. Thanks for dropping by.....stan

A bit of SAD creeping in my wife says I suffer from it,
Damn I think it is missing all the things you have written about here.
Tonight it is trying to snow and as it is mixed with rain then the morning is going to be a bit slippy.
Not long to go till the sun reaches out again early for the clouds to burn.
It is horrible wishing time away at our ages, I was only born yesterday and now look what has happened, lol
Have a great day tomorrow, Spring is coming soon even tomorrow, on the wings of a Sparrow lol.

I think what a lot of people think is sad is actually wistful. Heck, Susan says almost everything I write is sad so what do I know? It's been wonderful weather here the past few days for being mid winter Highs of around 60 and lows right a freezing with clear skies. Likely just setting us up lol. Always good to see you drop by......stan

I've been caught in a snowy weather this vacation in jordan. Haven't seen it or had such freezing temperatures for ages. The kids were so happy though to make a snow man and throw some snow balls on each other. Not me though. I am grateful to live in this part of the world where winter comes shy for few days only.
Your words have said it all.
Thank you.

your free-verse here and how good it is, I will really try to follow your example. I get stuck in a rut and think that free-verse would be very good therapy! I need to get excited about writing again.
This one just really touched me! I like winter scenes, I love snow for Christmas, and I even like to throw a snowball or two. The rest of the time, I wish it would stay where it belongs, [anywhere but here!] LOL I didn't even notice that you had snuck a bit of rhyme in there. I had to go back and read it again. Everything in this poem seemed to gel and it was consistent from beginning to end. The title was a bit terse, but apt. Great stuff, as per usual! ~ Gee

This must be the place, 'cause there ain't no place like this place anywhere near this place.

Yeah, I expect where you're from seeing snow gets old fast. Usually when we Do get snow here it's maybe 4 inches and gone in a few days so I still view it as a treat. But we Do get quite a few days in a row of cold rain which makes me think i should move to Seattle for the sunny weather. As to trying free verse, I think you should go for it once in a while. I've found that it actually helps me in writing my preferred form. Thanks for the visit.......stan

I'm looking forward to those lengthening days of summer sun - and of course the joy of seeing shadows - because both truly are missed. I love the little twist at the end! This poem has the "sigh" factor - very well done Stan - I love it. :)

I actually prefer cold weather because we have such stifling heat here in the summer but even I grow tired of cold rain after a while and look forward to seeing the sun. I appreciate your visit.......stan

You should make your first sonnet in the workshop a "pastoral" poem.
Always a good read Stan.
