About workshops

Workshops on Neopoet are groups that meet for a certain period of time to focus on a certain aspect of poetry. Each workshop participant is asked to critique all the other poems submitted into a workshop. A workshop leader helps coordinate -- they set the agenda, give participants feedback on whether their submissions and critique are at they level expected of them, and after the workshop is over, give feedback to participants.

To join a workshop, first find one that is of interest to you. Once you have found the right workshop (and verified that it is open -- you can find this out in the description below), you can apply to join the workshop.

Join the Neopoet online poetry workshop and community to improve as a writer, meet fellow poets, and showcase your work. Sign up, submit your poetry, and get started.

shall draw the Thing as he sees It, for the God of Things as They are.'
(Rudyard Kipling)

I fancy this would be a great fun. It is the side that I am looking forward to improve in my poetry. Not that I haven't written anything with the sense of humour, but I always thought there are certain techniques or/ and language usage that should be used to best show this side. I would love to join you dear ladies though I will be in a vacation, during the first days, but I hate to see such a chance slip away from me.

So, I'd LOVE to be there. What do you say?

I read that line in the syllabus portion after i made the query. It's good that you have given enough time before you start the WS. I guess it could be because of the upcoming Christmas festivities with which many folks would be preoccupied.

Humor In Writing
__________________
Have you ever wondered what makes people laugh?
Humor can take may forms
EG: Dry, slapstick, sarcastic etc out and out foolish
my favorite people are Jeff Dunham, and Larry the cable guy among others
I tend to learn toward dry humor as in Bristish humor(Monty Python)
In fact one of my favorite shows is " Keeping Up Appearances"

It is said laughter is the best medicine. I truly believe it is.
It relieves stress( even for a little while)
less frown lines

So then let us know
1- what type of humor do you lean toward
2- why do you think laughter is the best medicine3- who are some of your favorite comedians or movies

Chrys
Let your mercy spill on all these burning hearts in hell(Leonard Cohen)

author comment

Upon examination I think I'm a bit old fashioned when it comes to humour, I like:

1) Slap stick, quick wit, banter.

2) Laughter is the best medicine because it's a great healer and gives off positive energy.

3) I too like Jeff Dunham - and some of the Pink Panther films ( not all ), Tommy copper,
Bob hope films, Norman wisdom, sitcoms such as "out numbered"
( about a mother/father + three intelligent children ).

I'm sure I could site other examples - but this will give you a rough idea.

Love Mand xxxx

Oh I can you on and on but the humor I least like (and I know there are ppl that will vehemently disagree with me)
Three Stooges, Marx Bros and the like I just do not find stupidity much of a humor but to each his own lets hear what others have to say

Chrys
Let your mercy spill on all these burning hearts in hell(Leonard Cohen)

author comment

I guess humour can be abit of a minefield! This workshop should be interesting! ;;-)

Being as staid and humorless as I am
I guess sarcasm ain't worth a damn.
And the "gotcha" type of humor
to me is just a rumor.

Slapstick always make me sick
while being dry can make me cry.
To make folks laugh is quite a trick
and something which I seldom try.

I even think it is a sin
to say laughter is like ac medicine
for people say they'll die from laughter
on their way to the hereafter.

So don't expect to see from me
any humorous poetry

Your poem made me laugh Stan!

are you joining us or just posting your comment let me know so I may add you to the list

Chrys
Let your mercy spill on all these burning hearts in hell(Leonard Cohen)

author comment

She doesn't seem to see
her list already contains me

I'll get caught up from being out of town for a few days asap

I am inclined to go towards sarcastic humor or dark humor. I love Jeff Dunham, he is a personal favorite. I also enjoy Jeff Foxworthy, Bill Engvall and a few others. As far as movies, one of my favorite comedies would be Robin Hood Men In Tights. I don't watch alot of comedies. I am drawn into Psycho-dramas, crime shows/movies, something I can analyze or pull apart mentally. Myself as a person, I have a very dry or sarcastic sense of humor. I can fall on the dark side of humor as well. It depends on the situation and who I am dealing with. My writing is very rarely humorous so I thought this might be a good way to try something new.

Keep Writing,
Carrie

"Quoth said the Raven, NEVERMORE"

yes I enjoy those that you have mentioned as well
ok lets wait for the others before we get into working with humor

I too watch may of the crime shows

you may find it a bit silly at first but there is going to be method to my madness by the end of the workshop lol

1- what type of humor do you lean toward
I have more of a laugh at satire or just slapstick

2- why do you think laughter is the best medicine
Laughter lets your troubles rest some place so that natural healing can heal the thought process..

3- who are some of your favorite comedians or movies
Fry, Connolly, Dave Allen, and several ladies that my memory cant recall at this moment, Oh and that very rude Australian who made tapes of his singing popular songs with a swearing twist.
There are so many out there that make me laugh.

....
Love the Monty Python movies, but hate the television shows

Although I relate more to English humour - love Blackadder (especially Baldrick and his 'cunning plans'), Keeping up Appearances, Outnumbered...I also like a few American, such as Fraser (I adore Niles) and Seinfeld (really enjoy the cynicism and hints at selfishness)

I HATE slapstick...

Pmsl at Bette Midler and Shelley Long....

Loved the interaction between Sandra Bullock and Melissa McCarthy in The Heat....

Was never really that keen on Robin Williams, although loved the man himself

and of course I really relate to the laconic Australian subtleness.... (lol - and perhaps the not so subtle)

Love a well told dirty joke or a good one-liner...

I could go on... but I think that's enough for now eh?

so finally - laughter is the best medicine because it loosens up the seat of the soul in the same way that a good cry can do...

we have not heard from Rula, Wesley or Raj as yet but I would like to keep this moving as there are four parts to it

before anyone questions my sanity no I have not gone nuts we are going to go to the extreme side

what I would like all you you to do next is think about at least three no less prefer more fairy tales
take those three or more and fracture or scramble them. did know you were attending a cooking seminar did you,
by fracturing I mean mix them up , just that alone starts to get hysterical

1- mix them up
2-write and post poem in stream
BE SURE TO TITLE IT AS A WORKSHOP ENTRY

EXAMPLE: you might have Red Riding hood meeting the three pigs as a home improvement inspector and he/she (the inspector) gets eaten by the three bears who was rescued by grandma wearing the glass slipper etc etc

it must be in the form of a poem
it does not have to rhyme post it in the stream and then just let us know here in this thread that it has been posted and it's title

take your time give it thought

I had written a poem called Fairytale Slayer, which was a very dark and twisted take on Fairytales and really shattered the hearts of those who truly believe. I will play nicely and try to write something with less dark humor and more laughs. Can Alice in Wonderland be used? I know it is not a "true fairytale" but it could be humerous.

Little red Riding hood
She is as cross as ten snakes.
Some tool wielding dwarfs,
Came and dug up her Grans garden.
They gave a short story
They were looking for Diamonds.
She gave them an apple each.
They immediately slept,
Head to toe in her small bed.

She snuggled up in the big bed.
There falling to sleep.
Later she was awoken.
Standing there were three bear (Not Bare) dudes,
Complaining that she was in the wrong fairy story.
To hell with this she said.
She set her big false toothed Gran on them,
The three bears ran and sheltered in a small house.
The damn thing was made of straw.
Big toothed Gran blew it down,
So they ran to the next one made of sticks.
This didn't stop Gran she just blew it to pieces.
Off they went to the Great Big Billy Gruff’s house.
This one was made of bricks.

The big toothed Gran was about to blow it.
When, a sweet white rabbit ran past.
It had a watch in its hand
Kept muttering something about being late,
As Gran was hungry she gave chase,
Running through the town up stairs and down stairs.
All this in her night gown.
I transgress I is in the wrong tale.
I is just a liddle lost Sheeps
Where are you Bo!

My submission is in. It is called Fairy Tale Mish Mash. I used Alice in Wonderland, Little Bo Peep and Red Riding Hood with a guest appearance by the Three Little Pigs and mention of Goldilocks. It was fun to write but in my typical, dark/sarcastic fashion. I found it to be funny but I am not sure if the masses will agree.

According to most my humor isn't funny but cruel. I guess my humor is too serious. What you think Chrys?

I thought I was funny
i guess my humor wasn't
When I said I didn't have a ride
And had to walk thirty miles

We gathered together for our meeting
To enjoy a spiritual feeding

She thought i was serious
Oh my she was furious
We shoulda call for a ride
And not hold to that pride.

The shock on her face was priceless
I told her I was just kidding
She walked away seething
I guess my humor is worthless.

and I am very sorry for not being active the last few weeks. I travelled few days to Jordan (where my parents live) and visited some relatives. I was only on my cellphone so it was very difficult to participate actively.
Let me say that I have gone through most of the discussion. BUT to be quite honest I wasn't fully satisfied. Well, may be it isn't the leader's fault, I think, but mine.

I believe when it comes to humor, it has to do a lot with the cultural background.
I might not be the best one to tell jokes but I do understand jokes and tell them and laugh when I am told a good one.
Now, it is not the same when it comes to English, especially those using slang.
As for the first assignment, I am struggling to do the first assignment. I see I am the only one to see this difficult though I am well aware of almost all the fairy tales' characters.
If I can't come up with something within the few coming days, I will still make sure to follow with the comments and the discussion on this thread.

That you have made a really good point

Appreciation of various types of humour are very much reliant on cultural background
I might even be game enough to say that language and social backgrounds also factor....

The understanding and appreciation of jokes is very reliant on a person's ideological upbringing --- understanding being the operative word here - a group's (tribe's, country's) viewpoint on life is wrapped up within its language....

You two early birds can pair up ...
The task is to write together a humorous poem about a fictional character

I would presume that you can do this in any way that you find easiest
either write a half a poem each, agreeing on who writes the beginning and who writes the ending ... or you can alternate each stanza.... you can do it blind, agreeing only on a theme and character.... or you can collaborate fully....

i presume the easiest way would be to communicate through pm.... or i believe that you can open a work place that you can both use - jess would be able to tell you how (i haven't ever used that particular tool)

Good luck xxxx

... that there is little talk of "irony".

I quote from that bastion of information integrity Wikipedia:

Irony (from Ancient Greek εἰρωνεία (eirōneía), meaning "dissimulation, feigned ignorance"[1]), in its broadest sense, is a rhetorical device, literary technique, or event characterized by an incongruity, or contrast, between what the expectations of a situation are and what is really the case, with a third element, that defines that what is really the case is ironic because of the situation that led to it.

Irony is one of humor's best tools.

I went through my serious poems and am having trouble as well. I don't see where I can possibly turn them into humor based on the serious tone of them. I might be able to redo one of my Nevermore poems and make it humorous but I am not sure if that will do. My serious poems have a lot of emotion in them and I don't think I can make them funny,

I have a question - Stan and I are working on our joint effort via message. I've noticed that half the poem has gone! does it keep a history? if so can it be accessed? I'm probably panicking for no reason - I would ask Stan but he'll be asleep until this afternoon. :) Sadly I haven't kept the poem on my word processor ( Silly me )

I await a response!

Is it just that the messages have become numerous?
If so, you just need to go to the top of the page and load previous messages
