Workshops on Neopoet are groups that meet for a certain period of time to focus on a certain aspect of poetry. Each workshop participant is asked to critique all the other poems submitted into a workshop. A workshop leader helps coordinate -- they set the agenda, give participants feedback on whether their submissions and critique are at they level expected of them, and after the workshop is over, give feedback to participants.
To join a workshop, first find one that is of interest to you. Once you have found the right workshop (and verified that it is open -- you can find this out in the description below), you can apply to join the workshop.

Hi everybody Renga starts Sunday
I'd like to thank everyone for joining.. I'm glad to be here with yall writing Renga 6. The workshop will last a week, Sunday to Sunday. We will have a brief discussion then start sharing Haiku, Senryu and Tankas..
Alid Get to start the poem by posting a Senryu or Haiku. Next I'll write the two liner. Then Jess, Stan, and Ian can post the next haiku, stanza or tanka, This way Alid will get the idea and the flow of Renga better.
Once each has posted their first poem we'll start again from Alid, Me, Jess, Stan and Ian. Not necessarily in that order.
I can't think of a better way to learn four different forms of Japanese poetry nicely wrapped up in one.
Renga, Haiku, Senryu and Tanka.
Lets write a great Renga poem.

dissembling friendship doubts
As you can see, Alid's post is Senryu. I've add a couplet to it. Now the poem is Tanka.
It makes no difference if it's a Haiku or Senryu adding a couplet makes it Tanka.
As each author add their Haiku, Senryu, or Tanka to the poem, Renga is collaboratively being written by several poets.
So, we see the meaning of Renga being manifested..
"Renga is a form of linked poetry which evolved from tanka, the oldest Japanese poetry form." http://www.ahapoetry.com/renga.htm#start

Hi Barbara
In the additional couplet, what is the syllables' formation? is it 7-7 or 7-6? I'm asking because the second line seems to have only 6 syllables..
Alid
Ian.T
Mon, 2014-04-21 04:33
Alid
I also think that the second line has only 6 syllables,
Most of these can be added to by just one single syllable word, in this case something like:-
rid self of clandestine thoughts
dissembling friendships dark doubts
Well spotted young man, take care and join the group,

I am still not very clear about the differentiation between the four forms Renga, Haiku, Senryu and Tanka. So this would be a wonderful opportunity for me to follow the posts and comments of the participants for learning on line.
My very best wishes for this workshop for a successful launch, engrossing and enlightening and as you have said for it to be a a collaborative effort to come up with a great Renga ...

Difference between Four types of poetry
Renga, Tanka, Haiku and Senryu
Haiku- "Haiku is Japanese lyric verse form having three unrhymed lines of five, seven, and five syllables, traditionally invoking an aspect of nature or the seasons"http://www.thefreedictionary.com/haiku
Senyru-"A senryu is a three line Japanese poem structurally similar to haiku. It is unrhymed and the subject is based human nature. It is usually satirical or ironic."http://members.optushome.com.au/kazoom/poetry/senryu.html
Tanka-"is an unrhymed verse form of thirty-one syllables or sound units1 most often written in one continuous unpunctuated line."http://www.tankaonline.com/About%20Tanka%20and%20Its%20History.htm
Renga-"meaning "linked poem," began over seven hundred years ago in Japan to encourage the collaborative composition of poems. Poets worked in pairs or small groups, taking turns composing the alternating three-line and two-line stanzas. Linked together, renga were often hundreds of lines long, though the favored length was a 36-line form called a kasen. Several centuries after its inception, the opening stanza of renga gave rise to the much shorter haiku.
To create a renga, one poet writes the first stanza, which is three lines long with a total of seventeen syllables. The next poet adds the second stanza, a couplet with seven syllables per line. The third stanza repeats the structure of the first and the fourth repeats the second, alternating in this pattern until the poem’s end

The workshop will end Monday, I'll post the collaborated Renga 6 poem with audio to the stream with all authors name listed in the author section on Tuesday.
Have fun adding your additions, Anybody who wants to be a part of Renga 6, who isn't already here can still join between now and then and post their addition by Sunday. Though nothing is in concrete, I don't wanna linger too long on Renga 6.. There is a Renga 7 lurking in the wind.

Just asking
Will I be correct to assume that a renga will always end with a couplet?
Barbara Writes
Tue, 2014-04-22 14:23
Yes, you are correct
Because a renga is a string of tanka verses. As you are beginning to see a renga is a creation of five Japanese poetry forms in one starting with a
Senryu or Haiku + Couplet = Tanka + Tanka + Tanka + Tanka = Renga
Renga was designed to bring many poets together at a round table to create a collaborative poem with many authors. All you need is two people or as many as want to join. The fun part is you can come and post, go away for a while, come back and post again if it's still open.
The Renga can stay open for days, weeks, months, or years before closing. The person that started the renga is the one that decides how long it will stay open.

nice discussion
Keeping syllable count is important when considering traditional Japanese structure. Not everybody think strict guidelines is necessary. I believe if you gonna call Japanese poetry by it's name then you should consider adhering to the guidelines, if not then it's a choice modern form, though not wrong because it's a poet's prerogative to be who they choose and form their own writing style.
With that said, I've created my personal style of Renga here at Neopoet. The Japanese has strict guidelines for poetry that goes back 1700 years. I though have shaved off some strict rules and made Renga writing easier to understand and follow. As for Senryu (people), Haiku (nature) and Tanka (nature and people), I think they're best written according to key guidelines.

I have asterisks at the point of error. Stan would you like to fix this. You posted a tanka, it needed a couplet.
Now you gotta read three dimensional lol. That is, create a couplet from your tanka that complements the haiku before it and the senryu after it. You can do it.
Okay, posting tanka is acceptable but please make sure you place it properly. A tanka can only come after a couplet not a senryu or haiku. When we don't follow stated guidelines or read the last stanza in the Renga, the flow is abruptly stopped and hard to fix.

hidden under brush
In cozy shade of the greens
branches reach out to befriend
Sit and drink the thoughts
Take the world off of your back
Enjoy your dream state
Think others, and how they are
Be aware of things to share..
Try mending fences
make most of the gift of life
with a welcome smile

Renga 6
Let enmity die
so that friendship blooms anew
in its true beauty
rid self of clandestine thoughts
dissembling friendship dark doubts
back to back under
a sprouting spring tree swaying
no words are needed
Carving letters on the bowl
joining like souls for ever.
Letters may wither
yet the bowl will symbolize
delight in sharing
cattle graze where old house stood
memories of past lingers
The jingle of bells
ring like those nursery rhymes
when the cattle graze
Change to milk abundant grass
Loads of methane cooking gas
And I think of herds
of both cattle and people
safety in numbers
But also the loss of oneself
a sometimes bitter trade off
true love and friendship
tall trees behind thick forest
hidden under brush
In cozy shade of the greens
branches reach out to befriend
Sit and drink the thoughts
Take the world off of your back
Enjoy your dream state
Think others, and how they are
Be aware of things to share..
Try mending fences

as two spirits lay entwined
in silent passion
Through warm hugs and sweet kisses
one courts peace and harmony

If this is needed,
I was feeling bored,
so carried on with the theme,
of love entwined,
to night whispers
and mornings gleam:-
Starlit sky whispers
Love told to listening ear
Held forever dear
Morning sun hides whispers
Profusion of smiles break out
A good flow has been achieved and the theme has become steady as the story unfolds, may be we need two players in this theme?
Take care out there and know that there are ones that watch over you, Yours Ian.T

My syllable counter still gives 7 for the first line, if only 6 then just add the between hides and whispers lol.
I had that originally but took the "the" out to make 7, I shall execute my syilly counter, Have a great day out there and kiss the sunshine, yours Ian.T

syllable counter got quite a shock when I put it on the chopping block,
It became an "able counter"
shorter and of no use to me,
I don't work in a bank my conscience is free
Chopped some more,
there it was an "able outer",
I thought now this is more sense,
I can cover a book and all its contents,
or a deep fielder in cricket just the wicket.
Another chop and what do we see,
things were getting "beter" just short of one letter,
damn I thought what do I do,
I'll give it a thump and see what comes through,
I am now as happy as hell I shall spend a few days
before I sheer another letter,
the last chop gave me a "beer" that's better
So here's to you all,
I wish you good cheer.
OK I know what you now see
another chop and it says just
"be"
Now I am fearful as my cutter came down,
Just single letters and ones a noun,
With some glue I felt so sorry,
stuck it to its mate and let them "be"
Just for you and me La, La.
Loves you all,
Sparrow

Yes have fun Great idea
As long as there are two or more people wanting to Renga, I'm here to lead the workshop... If a renga workshop is not running and someone wants to write a renga just PM me and I'll open a new.
.
The first 5 Renga went longer and fizzled out..so, I ran renga 6 for only a week as a trial, It went better than I expected..much smoother, way beyond successful.
With that said, Renga poems will only run a week now...then closed before starting new one a week or so later to prepare finish renga for submission to the stream.
So, anybody wanting to learn Renga poetry writing is welcome to learn in a fun way here .

"With that said, Renga poems will only run a week now...then closed before starting new one a week or so later to prepare finish renga for submission to the stream"
Does this mean that at the conclusion of this Renga 6 thread, you will be tweaking it up and posting it as the final version in stream?

As we started lets end
Barbara, a lovely Renga, these with your ways could be on going, but pausing for breath now and then as others will need to join.
This one is 26 and with my bit 28 that is quite a good Renga for the Western poets, I have written two bits for the last stanzas but if there are any additions then that will be fine you may wish to write the final two stanzas which should be only right, go well young lady and ask if there are any other things that need help with:-
We shall journey on.
Each to their own way of life
So let your love flow.
Call to me when you are near
Rejoice as our time comes.

rejoicing our time has come

Renga 6 Enmity dies friendships blossom
Let enmity die
so that friendship blooms anew
in its true beauty
rid self of clandestine thoughts
dissembling friendship dark doubts
Back to back under
a sprouting spring tree swaying
no words are needed
carving letters on the bowl
joining like souls for ever.
Letters may wither
yet the bowl will symbolize
delight in sharing
cattle graze where old house stood
memories of past lingers
The jingle of bells
ring like those nursery rhymes
when the cattle graze
change to milk abundant grass
loads of methane cooking gas
And I think of herds
of both cattle and people
safety in numbers
but also the loss of oneself
a sometimes bitter trade off
True love and friendship
tall trees behind thick forest
hidden under brush
In cozy shade of the greens
branches reach out to befriend
Sit and drink the thoughts
take the world off of your back
enjoy your dream state
think others, and how they are
be aware of things to share..
Try mending fences
make most of the gift of life
with a welcome smile
life is simply beautiful
let us build bridges, not walls
Let heaven witness
as two spirits lay entwined
in silent passion
through warm hugs and sweet kisses
one courts peace and harmony
Starlit sky whispers
love told to listening ear
held forever dear
morning sun hides the whispers
profusion of smiles break out
Cock-a-doodle call
potty time calls out granny
little ones queue up
Robin and Parrot gather
fruit and nut for their babies
As the bird sing out
look for the smile of a child.
they are beautiful
let me be a child in life
seeking joy avoiding strife.
Joy is infectious
read scripts on baby faces
licking lollipops
come night, huddle with the blokes
engrossed in bed time stories
We shall journey on.
each to their own way of life
so let your love flow.
call to me when you are near
rejoice as we draw closer.
Time to celebrate
friends and foes shed enmity
drowning it in wine.
no matter how strong the chill
warmth of a hug is supreme
Come to the table
where poets co write
learn how to renga
under the cherry blossom
friends meet to etch their stories
