short stories

I know Neopoet is a poetry site but in its earlier incarnation it also accepted short stories. Good poetry and good prose have a lot in common I think and writing in one could not help but improve writing in the other. Plus it might be interesting to see folks trying their hands at something new. So the question is : Do ya'll think bringing short stories back (if technically possible at this time) would be a good idea?............stan

I think we've talked about this somewhere, but now I'm not sure where. There is nothing stopping anyone from posting short stories to their blogs, but I haven't seen anyone try (that I can think of).

All I can remember from the old incarnations of the short stories on Neopoet is that they were highly neglected.

Critique, don't comment.

I remember it being discussed and nothing coming of it. I was just wondering if there was any interest in short stories here........stan

I adapted some of my short stories to prose/poetry it is a hard task but on Neo it was the only way.
I would love to see a separate place for short stories, but it would need to have a monitor and they are hard to find.
So I think we should just have a blog time set aside, one or two days each month for Neo's to put some of their short stories on our site..
I will put one on blog on 1-May and see what happens, Take care out there, love you all, yours Ian.T

I like your idea of setting a specific period of time each month for submitting short stories on blogs. Let's see if this idea gains any momentum. If it does we can both post a story on the first week of May and see if anybody else wants to join in..........stan

I think the reason short stories were and will likely be neglected is that they are simply so time consuming and so much work to give decent critique.

You have brought up a good point about short stories being so time consuming.
But on the other hand, most of my short stuff takes up less space than some of the epic poems we have seen or I have toiled to write.
Good place to learn of punctuation and themes, themes being the main problem in poetry, but for me punctuation is a hard task master.
I think that only a window of one day per month or even a couple of times a year., I find short stories have to be what they are, "short"
Poetry has the same end product as snooker here only about one in five million players make it to the top, probably the odds of one poem doing that is less.
Then a good short story has more chance of being read by the many.
This is one reason that I wanted an annual of the best twenty to forty poems on Neopoet to be put in a book form, they would earn money for Neopoet and retain it as one of the best
sites there is.
We have a home behind here that has twenty people in wheelchairs and many cannot use their hands to read books.
They would love to hear your rendition of our poems on a disc.
Still we will wander as we do from place to place until someone with lots of cash invents the Idea again and carries it through.
Take care all and keep writing, one day, just one day,
Yours Ian.T

they must be very short. Max, say 500 words. Make your short stories embody the quality of poetry.

The idea of putting a limit on the story lengths had not entered my empty mind lol. I know I've read many short stories where the lengths were longer than some novels. Perhaps a good idea would be to have any stories beyond a certain length be submitted one chapter at a time.
The best stories of any length or subject Should contain near poetic prose so that would be one thing which a person could critique. But with stories a mere I like this because.... or I don't like it because...... would be helpful. As in depth critique as a poem demands would not be needed because there are fewer "rules" to break.........stan
