Reflections On A Song By Simon and Garfunkel

Reflections On A Song By
Simon and Garfunkel

Passion wanes like slack, neap tide
upon this island form
with little that can be denied
by distant, offshore storm

the weathered rock that is my bone
aches constantly within
a pain so deep that faith alone
will never heal its sin

though prose and poem have been my life
they could not ere replace
the human need for social strife
or love’s unique embrace

words of peace and winds of change
stirred currents within my room
where I’d hide to rearrange
the methods of my doom

the snows of winters past and fair
have faded from the pane
of my attic window where
I search for them in vain

and as this human, rocky isle
thinks back upon the song
I realize beyond my smile
that Paul and Art were wrong

Style / type:
Structured: Western
Review Request (Intensity):
I appreciate moderate constructive criticism
Review Request (Direction):
How was my language use?
What did you think of the rhythm or pattern or pacing?
Is the internal logic consistent?
Last few words:
The song, "I Am A Rock" by Simon and Garfunkel has always been a favorite of mine as it expresses much of what I thought I felt about life in general. However, in my later years, I see that neither I nor they were entirely accurate!

Some people are the rock upon which lives break and others are the bridge with which we can cross the stormy sea. I think Neil and Art would like your poem..........stan

Glad you enjoyed this, but its not Neil Simon, its Paul Simon. LOL!!

I think that "Imagine" by the Beatle is a good song to think on.
There are many good lyrics to songs in the world, as we live and move around our perception changes and values are rearranged, we have to believe in ourselves and the now, our futures are variable, our past is set in stone and all we have is a moment in time called now.
Now is a fleeting thing, and as you know that now can change so many things, and I don't think we have much control sometimes.
Lonnie you don't need a song from someone else to know yourself and your now, just take care, Yours Ian.T

.
There are a million reasons to believe in yourself,
So find more reasons to believe in others..

There were many great songs back then, a pity there aren't more being made now!

enough distance for mirages...perfect to take a thoughtfilled mind
and at the dock wharf to lean against the ice wall chest height and
dream.....been to the islands but not on the islands....i had the album
then....a rock feels no pain and an island never cries ...if i remember
rightly so......i feel pain now..shoulder....back...knees..heartache
sometimes....and i do cry sometimes although its rarer now..maybe
they were just cheering people up on some good harmonies and lyrics
ideals back then when things were harsh....but we change.....
like popcorn in plastic bags that i dont know how to cook but my
step dad whom is here on my wifes side loves..we used oil in pots..

i sit outside and listen to sixties music now....i grew up as a kid with
gary numan and blondie but we love the older stuff now.

Sitting outside is the best place to listen to music, especially oldies!

I love to listen to Pussycat from the 70's,
Simone and Garfunkel,
Blonde, and many others as us oldies tend to listen more..
And always watched the Old Grey Whistle Test, all that time ago loved Deep Purple then I thought their music was way before its time.
Go well both of you and have a great day, Yours Ian.T

and I have always loved their lyrics as well as music. I liked your poem as well Lonnie although perhaps you might consider exchanging "ere" for "yet" in verse 3 and I found the rhythm in verse 5 suffered a little due to word/syllable choice. How about an extra syllable in line 3:

"the snows of winters past and fair
have faded from the pane
of dusty attic window where
I search for them in vain"

Hope life is treating you well.

All the best

Keith

You may be correct, I will ponder the conundrum! Life is what it is, but at least I'm still breathing!
