It will be informative to see what authors of real books have to say about the process.......stan

Lol. Some might say real books aren't self-published, though that seems to be the way to go for most poets.
Especially those of us who aren't academics.

The process is lengthy, time-consuming and frustrating at times. But then again, the question is after all your friends and family have been given one (hope no poet sells their books to them), who's left to buy them? Is it
marketable? And to whom? Yes, it does go on Amazon, etc, nevertheless, chances of finding it and saying wow there's a poetry book I want to read are just about nil unless one pays for that feature.

The best source is your home town poetry paper, ezine or live reading. Make a recognizable name for yourself there and distinguish between polite applause and a thunderous round of approval.

Btw... Many of the poetry books I have were given to me by the poets themselves. That's networking, friends.

I still have a stack of copies of my book at my house still. How many books you sell can depend on who you get published through. I wasn't self published, but a majority of selling your book is learning to how to market yourself and your book. A few things that can help are contacting your local paper (they like to do blurbs about local authors sometimes) or doing book signings at local book stores. (The book signings usually require the store to order copies of your book to carry in the store - that's how you manage to get some copies on the shelf there.) Unfortunately, I'm a bit anti-social so I haven't worked on marketing myself. HA! I might after I get my second book published, but I'm entering the manuscript into some contests first to see what pans out in that area.

I'm curious. Are the poems that are *published* here, Chrys, Lonnie, Stan, Paul, Blue_Halcyon, other Neopoets, works that you're still *working on*, and have you had any *help* from the band of brothers and sisters here as far as moving you through the rough places, so to speak? Were the poems (if they were workshopped by Neopoets) then selected for your publications?

Or are we not eligible to read your *published* poems unless we buy copies of your books?

I think I like my way of publishing best. Free to those who want to read, except for the authors who have used my poems in their books; the anthology books I'm part of, (all proceeds go to charity). I've yet to meet a poet who makes a *living* from poetry. So imo, it's nothing but vanity press, no matter who publishes it though
it does count for something to be published in the New Yorker, The Sun, Atlantic Monthly, etc, and all the
poetry journals across the nation.. From these the Pushcart Poems are selected & published. Then you know you have *arrived*... other than that, publishing circa 2012 is no big thing, though I am wont to say it to young poets who are trying their hand @ Neopoet.

Feeling a soft-covered book (with a great shiny front and back cover with or without other poets', writers' blurbs) of one's own poems in one's own hands is a great high for the novice, who may even be feeling a bit incredulous,
amazed at how far s/he has come from his/her first poetic lines ever written. I know I did. And it felt great to be asked to be published.

The only "book" I've had pubished was by an inactive neo member. And All my stuff goes here 1st. Main reason to publish is for those who might like a collection of my favorite stuff for the money just isn't there for poetry. One of these days I might "sucker" a print publisher into taking some of my stuff but I'm not holding my breath lol.......stan

I write a poem, hard copy it and it goes to a folder. I then post it here on Neo poet. Not the pther way around. But if I am correct your are asking if we are posting published work? No we aren't . I will use my original (folder) for publishing not the work that has been added to , suggested changes etc. If I used that then I would have to get consent from everyone that had input into that work.
No there is no "money" in poetry. I do it for the joy of writing .
I hope this answers your question

depending on your agreement with your publisher, some of them require that your poems going into the book not be published elsewhere. So if you do have them posted somewhere, they are usually required to be removed until your contract is up. Most of my poems in my book were written when I was on a different poetry site.

I don't think any of us are looking to "arrive". Plus, those poets who have arrived, usually do so after they're dead. hahaha lol

I thought vanity publishing referred to publishers who rake you over the coals financially, such as the websites that charge you $3000 to publish a book. (Why anyone would ever pay that, I have no idea). I know there are a lot of print on demand publishers out there, which actually aren't the best option if you're looking to be taken seriously. Most of the stuff I've read suggests that you enter your manuscript into contests because it helps the sales of books to be able to say this book won such & such award.

So poets aren't really coming until they're going lol. That explains a lot........stan

A vanity publisher is any publisher that charges to publish your book
I know I had to remove any poems that I had published from Neo for that very reason.
Yes there are a lot of print on demand publishers my publisher is one of them but believe me I hjave known them to reject at least five people already that I know personally so they don't take just anyone

That is what a vanity publishers does . If you want to pay them they will print anything you send and the more you want them to do the more it will cost you.

Just for the hell of it I checked on one for my first book , If I had them edit, promote it would have been 2,500.00 Cover design would have been more

I would suggest not so much a contest as then they take your poem put it in an anthology and charge up to fifty dollars or more if you want to see your poem in print( that is how they make there money) It is not mandatory to buy the book but if you want it to see it in the book then you have to buy it.

I would suggest submitting individual pieces to different magazines
BUT a word of advice

MAKE SURE YOU CHECK ON THEIR RULES FOR SUBMITTING FIRST.

I was referring to contests where you enter you whole manuscript for a book publishing deal. Most of them usually grant an award of $1000-$2000 along with the publishing deal .
