THE TRUTH AND THE POLITICIAN

Our politicians
so mercurial
their loyalties
are difficult
to keep track of

Ideology
is a word
you will find
in some dusty archive
written perhaps
on papyrus
or clay tablets
political expediency
is the new
ideology

Their unwritten motto:
don't serve the people
be served by them
don't give the people
only take from them
what is rightfully theirs
don't answer questions
just prevaricate
don't think of the people
only think of yourself
don't think for the people
only think for yourself
don't believe in
sacrifice for others
make others sacrifice
for you
don't give a damn
about justice
turn it on its head
don't use the law
misuse it
don't use facilities
abuse them
don't - no not ever
believe that a rule
for one is a rule for all
there should be separate
rules for you

Then
when you need validation
go back to the people
with a begging bowl
lie to them
through your teeth
use every ruse in the book
to make them believe
that you are sincere
and once your bowl
is full
forget about your
promises
because
who says
promises
are made to honoured
they are made to lure
and beguile

Somehow
anyhow
you must come
to power
Once
you are well ensconced
for a minimum of
five years
you can go back
to your evil ways
without so much
as an iota of compunction
Who - or so you think
is there to challenge you
but, I think
I sense
a change
in the direction of the wind
The people's power
is gathering momentum
as it travels across
the vast prairies

One day -
any day
the people will descend
like a black ominous cloud
and will drown you
in a huge deluge

Then
and only then
will we
be able to return
to our lost paradise

Then
and only then
ideology will be
reclaimed
from dusty archives

Then
and only then
will all forms of decency
return home to roost

Then
and only then
we will be able to
sigh
a long breath of relief
and say
good riddance
to the vultures
which fed
on our living flesh

Then
and only then
will our great
nation
crawl out of
its ashes -
its decimation
and fly like the
beautiful golden
eagle
that it is
and was always
meant to be

I love this.

Did you see the masks they wear?
The hypocrisy behind every word spoken,
the empty smiles without flare,
trying to convince us they're transparent
when their broken promises,
so carelessly made over the years
reveal their real devices,
the charming words of liars!
See you, the greatest actors of our time!
Not in the tv or in the movies,
not in the talk shows or prime time
but on the stage of reality
during the campaign, hunting for voters
let's give them an applause
and award for being great actors
and strike off their claws.
When the curtains fall,
let the act ends there
before it poisons all
and affect us everywhere

Your sentiments and exasperation with politicians and their ways vividly expressed in this poem...i hope it helped ease out the steam....in doing so, you have created a profile of a typical politician....let us hope the new leadership would bring to bear its intent to change the course...success may not be easy yet a will to break precedents is welcome...

You are right. Hopefully, we will see some changes in the near future. That's what the people have voted for.

After the title, a blank page would sufficiently describe,
but the poem elaborated nuances unexpected,
thank you, enjoyed the read, well written.

Your title was the first time I've seen the words truth and politician in the same sentence in a long time lol. Our politicians and especially our president are well revealed in your poem.........stan

You are right - the biggest oxymoron: TRUTH AND THE POLITICIAN. We guys have had it (corruption) up to our eyeballs and we seem to be totally helpless against it. This poem was an outpouring of the anger, frustration and angst I feel and this is reflective of how every honest citizen of this country feels.

Thanks for the visit.

Cheers
