Greatest Influence Overcoming the Torture Level of Abuse to find my voice
About me I am an internationally published award-winning poet. I spent my first seventeen years in an insanely violent household, where I experienced severe mental, physical and sexual abuse. In 1998, I started therapy for intense PTSD and a dissociative disorder, which helped save my life and open the doors to my creative voices. I am a firm believer in "Change your MIND, Keep the CHANGE" and do my very best to BE and LIVE the change I wish to see in the world. I belong to the Academy of American Poets, the New Mexico State Poetry Society (NMSPS), am Secretary/Treasurer of the Valencia County chapter of the NMSPS, as well as being appointed their Publicity Chair. Oh, and by the way, I am also the Editor for the NMSPS’ quarterly newsletter, “Language of Enchantment”, and am on the Editorial Advisory Board of the Taj Mahal Review, an international journal of culture, arts, literature and poetry. I was a guest lecturer at the University of New Mexico's Valencia Campus' Creative Writing Class and will be again in Spring Semester. I was a featured reader at a Poetry Event on Friday, January 18, 2008 at Hastings Book Store, in Los Lunas, NM, and was the Headliner at “Steppin' Out Poet's Corner New Moon Poetry Festival” in Socorro, NM on April 6, 2008. I have two books already published, “Out of Cullen Street (A House of Madness)”, and “Painted Poems (Portraits of New Mexico)”, both available at www.harvardbooksellers.com, am having my third book, "Cats (Not the Musical)" under consideration for publication, and am working on three more. Poetry came with me when I came here to earth. Literary Awards: 2007 – Editor’s Choice Award, International Society of Poets 2007 - 1st Prize, Valley Visions Cultural Arts Festival, Los Lunas, NM 2007 - The International Who’s Who in Poetry 2007 – 5th place winner, Poetrysoup.com’s international online contest 2006 – Honorable Mention, Sol Magazine Winter Edition (online) 2006 - International Poetry Award of Excellence; 2005 - 1st prize in Poetrysoup.com's first international online contest; 2005 - International Poetry Award of Excellence; 2005 - The International Who's Who in Poetry 2004 - President's Certificate of Literary Excellence; 2003 - Shakespeare Trophy of Excellence 2003, 2002 - Nominated International Poet of the Year; named International Poet of Merit by the National Society of Poets In addition to singing bass with both the Albuquerque Symphony Adult Choir and the University of New Mexico Valencia Choir, I am a certified peer counselor for the mentally ill, a paraprofessional crisis/suicide line volunteer and Rune and Tarot Card reader. I am a founding member of the Rosa Parks Wall of Tolerance (a public tribute to thousands of Center supporters and others who have advanced the cause of tolerance in America, and a prominent feature of the Civil Rights Memorial Center in Montgomery, Alabama). I am also a founding member of the Martin Luther King, Jr., Memorial Project, which commemorates the life and work of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and honors his national and international contributions to world peace through non-violent social change. Further, I am a member of Doctors Without Borders, Southern Poverty Law Center, Amnesty International, the Interfaith Alliance & the ACLU. Wow

I am going to read as much of your work as possible. Coming from a very abusive father, I left home at 13 with the occasional visit with my mom who had left when I was 11 I can understand a bit of what you went through. Looking forward to reading your poetry. Don’t know how I missed you.
Respectfully,
