Welcome

Hey Chrys,

Thank you for the welcome! I’m having a bit of difficulty finding poets I know. I’m sure I will get the hang of it eventually…

Publishing a first book of poetry

Greetings! I’m even newer here than you, but already I have enjoyed your work. I’m also looking for a publisher of my first book of poetry, and hoped you would like to compare notes. I have published four scholarly books (under my full name of Robert Bates Graber) with traditional publishers, and have found it disappointing in several respects. I have a friend who, after publishing two books with traditional publishers, has been quite pleased with AuthorHouse. They charge $700 though, and it seems unlikely I would make that much on royalties. I have just heard from a poet friend–also experienced with traditional publishers–who speaks fairly well of PublishAmerica, which doesn’t charge the author, but also does not accept everyone. Meanwhile, I am trying to get my hands on a reference book called “Poet’s Market” or something like that… I would really appreciate anything you might tell me about your quest to get a book of poetry published!

Best,

Rob

Hello Rob, I wish you all

Hello Rob,
I wish you all the luck in the world with getting your book of poetry published. Congratulations on your other publications.
I have written a science/fantasy book of over 700 pages. I think that was my first mistake- the length. The publishers are leery of taking on a new author (un tried) on such a lengthy work. As soon as I gather up the steam, I am going to seriously work on the splitting of the manuscript into two parts. I might have more luck with that operation, as was suggested to me by a couple of publishers.
I also have a manuscript that consists of a compilation of poems, which I am trying to get published. It is rather different because it is all poems written by my alter ego who is male. It is a compilation of poems by a budding stalker who has tendencies towards becoming a serial killer- Very dark material. Right now it is being considered for publication by Sam’s Dot Publishing. I have published several single poems in their family of magazines, so that is how I got my foot in the door. At the moment I am barely daring to breath until I hear back from them.
I started out by purchasing the “2007 Poet’s Market” by Nancy Breen, which had been a real blessing to me. I have sent out a multitude of poems, and gotten lucky sometimes, by getting the right poem to the right publisher. Sometimes I have purchased a sample copy of a magazine to see what style that magazine accepts. Many magazine publishers do publish books of poetry and you can find them in the “2007 (or 8) Poet’s Market” I found my copy at Barnes and Noble (if I remember properly)
I have not looked into Publish America because I’m not a big fan of self-publishing. The reason for that is because you have to do most of the promotion on the book and I’m painfully shy in person. Chrys, poewriter58, on this site has self published a couple of books and is working on her third. Feel free to ask her about her view on this venture. I am sure she will be happy to answer any questions on this subject.
I have read some of your work, too and been blown away by it! Very classical.

Yours in Rhyme, C.M. Mattison (Cat)

Hey Cat, jsut wanted to say

Hey Cat, jsut wanted to say congrats on your latest offerings to the site, you seem to be on some kind of roll!

Now if you’d be so kind as to send your muse over to my place, it’d be much appreciated!

LOL, Kieran,

You know how it goes, its either feast or famine. I’d be most glad to share her with you but I fear she is a demon who takes a blood toll who when she offers her treasures takes a bite out of my soul… Are you sure you want her?

Always, Cat

RESPONSE TO QUESTION

Hello Candlewitch
I got your input on I=us=I. Thank you for your effort.
And I am still trying to understand how this site works. The simple task of responding to you seemed to be a trying task, but I’m a firm believer in practise makes perfect, or at least somewhat wiser. Refering to my poem it is as you summised , I believe we all come from the same SOURCE = GOD . Yet we have been bombarded by lie upon lie so that when we hear the truth we do not even know what it is. But I am talking from my own experience though. Not that I have a vast field of experience in this, I am more of a feeling person always struggling to put what I feel into words. Have not yet read your work but aim to do so after this message. All the best.
