We were
on shoulder
thickness walking
the crushed stone voice
in husk dust steps
the leather straps across
my shoulders
cutting in from all
we dared to hold
sharp and painful
pleasuring with each
jarring step
the sharp edges of the
cans digging into my
vertebrate
water sloshing
and all the while
the hot flash of traffic
in its breath
exhaust emissions
deisel fumes
and asbestos brakes
on long haul freighters
watched you walk ahead
the sunlight on your hair
the sway of your motion
the ankle rising and falling
the thighs under sweaty sun
gliding heavy
there were cool trees
along the rise of rock cuts
and unbearable open stretchs
we climbed down under a bridge
and stripped readily out of the
confining cloth
pulled off your shoes and hot socks
and rubbed your aching wet feet
ran in slipping and falling across
the sand and sharp crushed stones
while the passing drone traffic ran overhead
the water shocking and cold
we were so tired and sunbaked
and excited
the shadow cool and dark like the tannic
water
like nightfall and the harsh million stars
that blazed as we slept on moss atop
the ridge
truck lights flashing past
and falling stars cold
like shivering wishs
