Create a poem about something that would normally be considered worthless or rotten or nasty or ugly, or even just downright boring and turn it into something really special and/or worthwhile. Any form of poetry is acceptable. The key to winning this contest is an original approach and lots of imagination. The closing date is 31st July 2008.
First prize is ‘Staying Alive’ - an anthology of poetry about humanity and it’s strengths - includes work by W. H. Auden, Mary Oliver, Rita Dove, Louise Glück, and more.

money thick skin and the ability to renovate
nothing else is needed,
selfishness will see you through
I have a picture of my mother
see here in a silver frame
bought from the jewelry
she kept for me
the children have left, become old in their turn
grandchildren too busy clad in burial suits
and scalps that rustle smooth as silk
from beginning to end unchanged by every gift from
the done deal in the club on the corner by the flower stall
market hoarseness and the winter red noses
as cynical as anything money can talk
compassion into buying
screwing when drunk bored when not
bored when screwing bored when drunk
froth on the panicked horse
grim fortress feeling hid away
there are not so many now from all that started
so much earned no need for friendship
scattering our lives blood and bones
for oracles of self interest
hand sweeping over coins beat sweep clean
slash snap retire the cave
bone and clubs that sweat in the hand
polished gourds water boiling
teeth and vertebrae clacking like a duck’s bill
one spoon of tea no milk.
