To poems I shall no more assign rank numbers;

Of friends I think I won’t compile a list;

Of love I plan to not conduct a study,

To help the point of priceless things be missed.

Were you intending the

Were you intending the double meaning on the word ‘rank?’ Are you saying the numbers stink? ha ha; nice addition to the on-going argument about the stars….

(I uncharacteristically did not rate this poem… it just didn’t seem appropriate)

(Just my two cents, spend them on gum if you wish.)

Yes

Yes, the double meaning was intended; I’m glad you caught it. I wrote this last year when, after posting a couple numerical ratings on a different poetry site (poetbay.com), I decided I preferred not doing so.

Sounds like a plan

I like the expression of sentiment, Rob, but you’re stayin’ on my list will ye nil ye.

The comma after ‘study.’ Look at it again, would you? Do ya need it?

(Making a face)

I don’t like not bein’ verbose. I’m just tryin’ that terse thing on for size here. It don’t fit. I’ll rumble along in all my glorious prolixity next time.

I definitely agree about

I definitely agree about that comma, which I have deleted. Thanks! (I also decided to drop the text-type stuff in my previous comment.) I don’t at all mind being listed, but choose not to keep a list myself. Rest assured I keep an eye out for your work!

Comma Restored...

Well, now that I deleted the damn thing and have re-reread the poem, I remembered why it was there: it was supposed to clarify that the final line applied to all three uses of numbers, rather than the third alone. Maybe there is a better way to do that though. Meanwhile, I am restoring it!

No Rank

Laughing -
I see you do not wish to rank poems either!

I teach school and have to use specific criteria to
grade work - points have to be justified to the student
and parent - rating poems is such a bizarre concept
to me - we have no specific tool in which to measure
- as if we are expected to build a foundation based
on estimated measurements without any rulers or tape
measures being used - awww yeah - cut it here- that
looks about right.

I like - no list of friends and no study of love -
priceless things “missed” YES! I’ve been on sites
where everyone sends a friend’s request and most don’t even
say hello or comment on each other’s works.
LOVE analyzed = disappearance of the love, sometimes.
Don’t do experiments with it - just experience it.
And yes, art is priceless - what appeals to one person
may not appeal to another…variety is a beautiful thing.

I like the way you think.
You know I would, I have no doubt (big smile)

Thank you for posting this!

Sincerely,
Amara

Thanks for your wonderful

Thanks for your wonderful comment! As a classroom teacher I used to find I occasionally needed to resort to numbers to express my subjective reactions to student work (to allow the essay grade to be combined with the score on the objective portion of a test). But yes, one would prefer to use numbers only when one has SOMETHING along the lines of “rulers or tape measures”! Still, some people seem to enjoy attaching numbers to their impressions; and maybe there is some beauty even to this form of variety!? Yes, when I saw your remark in a forum, I realized we must be kindred spirits! When I went back to reread your comment to savor it a second time, I couldn’t find it. Can you remind me where it is?
Thanks again!

Rob

PS: Do you know the old movie “Dead Poets Society?” There was a stodgy old professor who killed—“crucified” perhaps—poems by plotting them on a cartesian plane. (Wish I could remember what the two variables were—must google that…)Not a great movie, maybe, but a pretty amusing concept I thought…

What spoilsport went and rated your poem?

I’m outraged! It wasn’t me—I swear it!

LOL! Oh heck, I am not

LOL! Oh heck, I am not dogmatically opposed to numerically rating poems, to making lists of friends (in this context it does help find the posts that one would like most not to miss), or even to doing scientific reseach on love; I would just rather not do these things myself! Thanks, skump.

Out Dated

A great point made here. Originally the voting was to simplify the matter of finding a spotlight poem. Now, however, we have our newsletter. Choice poetry is selected by the “we noticed” newsletter team. I really think this is the better way of highlighting talent outstanding and upcomming :)
Rob I would give this a ^5 for what it really speaks of but hehe I won’t :)

Yes, I noticed that, and it

Yes, I noticed that, and it does seem like a more sophisticated approach. I think highlighting poems according to the sheer number of hits per some time unit (other than by the author) is also interesting (in a different way), simply to inform us about the level of interest in—“popularity” of—a poem. Of course it should not be given a name that connotes artistic superiority; and as someone pointed out in a forum, this kind of highlighting makes the rich richer, so to speak… Thanks!

Dead Poet's Society

I remember that movie - Robin Williams played the teacher and
he had boys standing on desks reciting “Captain, My Captain”.
I need to watch that movie again - I’ve forgotten so much about
it and I did like it - thought it was great film, but my poor
memory is foggy at them moment.

I read what you said about finding work we like and I agree…
I do enjoy having a list of friends so I can keep up with their
work - find it faster - almost like subscribing to their writing.
I was once on a site where you did that - in addition to a friend’s
list you could subscribe to specific poet’s work - so if there was
someone you loved to read - you were sure to never miss one of their
posts. This list tended to be much smaller than the friend’s list,
which would often be over a hundred names long with only a handful
you really interacted with on a regular basis.

Overall, I enjoy this site (not that you asked) The quality
of work here is higher than where I came from - that one was
filled with adolescents - this is MUCH better - ahhhh!

Oh yeah, that post on the forum - it us under stars and promotions
in the advocates section - seems to be one of the more popular
threads with quite a few comments by a variety of members.

I’m long winded today - whew! Time for lunch break here,
hope you have a good day.
