Randall Stross on OpenID

In yesterday's Times, Randall Stross wrote an excellent piece about how archaic -- and how silly -- our current password-based logon systems are.

Chat room upgrade

The “static” indicator that let’s you know how many people are in the chat room has been replaced with a dynamic indicator that updates every five seconds. As a plus, you’ll notice a slight decrease in page loading times – the server doesn’t have to count the number of users in the chat room for every page load.

We’ve also activated new tools for our chat room moderators to help them keep things running smoothly.

Root Canal

Had root canal yesterday. And I’m not taking the heavy painkillers because I need to drive today. So I might be MIA for a little while.

Andrew

Happy New Year Everyone!

Wishing you all the best for 2008!

Barcelona!

I booked a last minute trip to Barcelona!

I’ll be there from December 26 to January 4.

My plans are very flexible. If any Neopoet members are in Spain, Portugal, or France… let me know if you’d like to get coffee. I’ll see if I can fit it in.

A much needed vacation

I guess I’m almost a public figure on this site - I should update you all on my coordinates now and then.

On Wednesday, I’m heading to Switzerland for an adventure. I’m going to spend eight days hiking solo in the alps, meeting new people, taking pictures, and maybe finding a new member or two :)

After my trip, I’m going to stay over with a friend in in Greece for a few weeks. I’ll be back in late August.

Experiment

We are experimenting with the theme over the next few hours - do not be alarmed if the site looks or acts unusual.

Peer Review

We’ve launched the framework for the peer review system. You should see a new option when you submit a poem or a short story - you can select whether you want your submission nominated for the front page, or if you want to publish it privately.

For the moment, we’re still showing all nominated poems on the front page. We don’t have the full peer review system launched yet. But when we do, all nominated poems will be just that - nominated - and our community will decide what poems rise to the level of “poem of the day” (shown on the front page).

Review Suggestion

We’re just finishing up the fine tuning on a new feature - we understand that some of our poets like “knock me on my back” raw critiques, while other preferred to hear more moderate constructive criticism. (Submit a poem now - and check it out!) So we’ve decided to let you tell the community exactly what you prefer. Special thanks to our member JS Schilling who phoned us with the idea this afternoon!

Profiles Improved! And other news

We rolled out an early version of the new profile system early Sunday morning. Let us know what you think! (Hint: you can check out a profile by clicking any member’s name or photo. So just click “Andrew” above if you want to see mine)

New! Now you have your own space on the web. You can tell your friends to visit you at www.poet411.com/yourname. Take a look at my page for an example - www.poet411.com/andrew!

Our next step - integrating all your recent poems, short stories, and blog posts on your profile so the whole world can see it.

Other news - We wanted to mention that our friend David Baker has left Poet411 for family reasons. He’s still a member of our website and he hopes to come back as soon as circumstances allow.

Official Survey - What do you think of the point system?

Let your opinion be known - what do you think of the point system?

More new features

The invitation feature is finally alive! (It doesn’t work perfectly, but it works)

Only registered Advocates can invite new members to get instant access.

You can invite colleagues by clicking the link under the “Volunteer” tab. Please keep in mind our guidelines for sending invitations - if you are unsure of whether you should send an invitation please contact Paul or your team leader.

…There are other updates, but I’m going to let you have fun discovering what they are yourself.

New Feature

Many of us use Microsoft Word to edit our poetry. It’s a great tool, though
when it comes time to take our work from the dark interior of our computers and
put it on the Internet, somehow when we “copy and paste” the
paragraphs end up strangely disjointed and uneven. Sometimes our letters transform into a
different words, accented symbols and strange Asian characters pop up like
mushrooms among our thoughts - in short, it’s mess.
