Thank you for your interest in Advocates!

Advocates is the engine of our poetry community. This site is entirely run for poets by poets - and Advocates is your path to have a say in how things happen. From making policies about how a poem is chosen as "Poem of the Day" to deciding when and how contests are ran, our members have complete control.

Advocates:

  • Welcome new members to the site and help them get started
  • Serve as examples of our culture -- offering insight, acting diplomatically, and helping other poets to improve their work
  • Help mediate minor disputes, and bring major conflicts to the attention of the AEC
  • Work with the AEC to discuss major changes that affect the culture of the site, new features, and other issues
  • Advocate for the best interests of our community

We have a simple application process to get into the Advocates program. Just fill out the application form and we'll try our best to get back to you in 24 to 48 hours. Note: If you'd like to apply as an Neopoet Live chat host, please contact a member of that team - currently the application process is different.

You can apply as a general Advocate or to a specific position. We describe them all below.
Specific Positions:

  • The Member Coordinator is the head of our advocate program. They have a hand in every part of the member experience. They work with Directors and other members of staff to advocate for the poet and make sure that everything is fair, efficient, and effective.
  • Director of Special Projects - We're looking for someone with an excellent sense of organization, an exceptional ability to lead, and strong communication skills to manage special projects that make a genuine difference in our organization. The person will work with members and trustees to define and communicate the needs and goals of a particular project and work to recruit and lead individuals who volunteer for that particular assignment. (see the special projects site for some context)
  • The Assistant Director of Special Projects keeps in touch with members who volunteered to lead projects and offers resources, solves problems, and helps out the Director as needed.
  • Forum Director - We're looking for a dynamic individual who has great ideas how we can engage our members on the forum, a sense of warmth and kindness, and an ability to consider both sides of a debate if any disagreements come up between members. The Director is also responsible for working to find capable members of the forum who are interested in helping out as a moderator for a specific section.
  • The Contest Director conjures up brilliant ideas for new contests, engages and motivates members to submit their best work, and makes sure contests are run fairly.

General Positions:

  • Forum Moderator - We're looking for a dynamic individual who has great ideas how we can engage our members on the forum, a sense of warmth and kindness, and an ability to consider both sides of a debate if any disagreements come up between members.
  • Mentor - Mentors work one-on-one with emerging poets to encourage growth as a writer.
  • Greeters - make a warm human connection to new members and serve as the first resource to help new poets make the most of Neopoet and become involved members of the community
  • Chat hosts - coordinate and run our chatroom on Neopoet Live. [This is run outside of the AEC]

(This page is under development as we grow the Advocate program. This is a draft and more details are coming soon.)
